This morning I woke up with the program about the universe by the delectable Professor Brian Cox still on my mind. It was the last program that I partially got to watch last night.

If memory serves me, I watched the Prof get really down and dirty about the nitty gritty of the ever dying universe.

Being somewhat confronted with theosophical thought of late and not being a scientist, I have the privilege of looking at all these different theories and get to wonder at all of them and muse on.

It has always amazed me just how inadequate the human effort is at trying to explain what is going on all around us.

One of the main things that last night’s program seemed to be about was the law of entropy. How delightful to watch this softspoken “youngster” explaining while playing in a sandbox, just how the winds of time break everything down into chaos. It seems the idea that time is linear and we cannot go back in time, has now strongly taken hold of the scientific world. However, I’m sure that just as the idea that all is ruled solely by the law of gravity has been abandoned, this fad will also, given time, fall into nothingness.

What I used to think was so strange about the law of gravity bit, was how all the ideas (the oscillating universe) surrounding this, always ignored the details of its own controversy.

As Prof Brian pointed out in an earlier show, gravity is not so strong at all, catching a falling object and proving his point. After all, there was the Big Bang, which blew apart all of the “non-existent” universe from a single infinitessimally small utterly dense and hence totally “gravitated” object into this ever expanding balloon of matter. So at the moment that gravity was strongest, the universe blew apart, totally anihilating gravity. Well, that blew away the center into emptiness. So how could it then draw the outer shell back in, since there is nothing to do so? So how could the universe then oscillate? Well, it doesn’t, now does it? Rather it would seem that gravity plus the force of the Big Bang must make the universe expand at an ever accelerating rate. Objects in closer proximity would attract one another, while being blown away from the more remote things, where gravity can no longer take hold.

In yesterday’s program, something about this linear time table, (time only goes forward and we can never go back) bothered me to no end. Just as he was about to explain this, Prof. Brian also mentioned the closest known star to earth: Proxima Centauri. He mentioned we were looking back in time at this star because its light was emitted thirteen billion years ago and is only reaching us now! So if our eyes can go back in time why can’t the rest of us then? And also this: we aren’t flying through space at the speed of light now are we? Then how can we be at this point in the universe, observing light that was emitted umpteen billion years ago? Shouldn’t it have passed this point long before our slow matter did?

This model of the universe that currently takes center stage ignores again its own contradictions of course. If time is so linear, then why can we travel in time then? We do so every day you know. This has been shown using atomic clocks and traveling to the other end of the earth. You notice this on a daily basis because no two clocks ever run in sync as it is impossible for them, since time is measured by the rotation of the planet upon which we find ourselves, a most inadequate way to measure the passing of the universe after all. The passing of time is always the passing of an object through space. And we can too travel through space back and forth. Ok, we can’t travel to the other end of the universe, nor to its empty center, but those are semantics now aren’t they? We could if we had the means to do so. Because there is space there and nothing to stop us from doing it but physical ineptitude on our part. But our telescopes do so every day.

This idea that time is only linear (an inadequate way to describe its forward vector) is actually belied by the very arguments for it.

Everything I hear and everything I see is already in the past! Words take time to travel to my ears and so do images. So the only thing I am ever doing is going back in time. Making any observation about anything is then at best a momentary journey in time. As somebody once said, the only science that exists, is history. And history is so very inaccurate at best now isn’t it?

So, linearists as I will call the proponents of this theory of the ever dying universe, do not give us any more adequate answers than do relativists or creationists.

Let me ask this: what was the Big Bang? What caused it? If things are supposed to stay in the same state untill some other force interferes to change the stalemate, then what force was this? What caused the Big Bang then? We know that the Big Bang was the moment of creation, a word even any scientist uses. Well, what caused it then? Certainly the second law of dynamics doesn’t explain it, because it is said, (though I contend against this) that time did not start untill the Big Bang happened.

I would suggest that rather than continueing to explain the universe merely by itself, the answer does lie in the multiverse. Could it be that the gravity of another universe heated up things a bit so our spec of dust on the beaches of the gods, had no other choice but to spring into life? Could it be that the universe continues to expand, because there is a pull from nearby universes that surround ours? Could it be that our universe started to and is still colliding with another universe at this very moment?

Another thing about this linear explanation bothered me and that was the other end: the death of the universe. Prof. Brian explaind how all stars would eventually die and that would be the end of the stellar age. I did not see the rest of the program, so forgive me if my next question was actually answered. But how, if energy cannot ever be lost, is this possible then? How could the universe die a quiet cold death if energy cannot ever be lost? How can such strong gravitational objects as black holes simply wander about without finally attracting each other and im- and ex-ploding again? What is to stop them from bumping into one another?

Personally I think that such strong gravitation will take over then, things will collide again and new objects, universes or galaxies will again spring into life.

And here is a by-the-way question: if the whole universe is expanding as a result of the Big Bang, then why do some galaxies collide, even as we are seeing them do? Shouldn’t they be flying away from each other as we perceive the whole universe to be doing? Doesn’t the colliding of galaxies prove there is more at work than just an unhalted expansion? The Big Bang should be pushing these galaxies away from one another , since its force gives them an outward push in the same direction away from the center of the universe and away from one another. How can they be colliding then?

Is it possible that some of these galaxies actually come from the other direction and are part of the collision of universes? And if this is not so and their individual gravity is strong enough to make them collide rather than fly away from one another, are we not seeing this happen elsewhere and does their collision not deny the Big Bang theory?

We should NEVER suspect either ourselves or any other person in history to be capable of inerrancy.

Leaders who wish to only hear “helpful” or positive comments and who are only interested in positive feedback should never be leaders in any democratic system.

Members of any organisation in any democracy in the world must at all times be heard and must themselves at all times be adamant about being heard.

Leaders who feel that large bodies of members are cumbersome and unwieldy and hence demand full powers of decision-making from those bodies are not leaders that belong in democracy.  Such should join the Ceauşescu fan club.

Members of decision-making bodies that wish to abdicate their decision-making powers have no business being in any such body.

Indeed the adage “I may disagree with what you say, but I will fight to the death for your right to say it” should  be engraved in stone in any organisation and be engraved on plaques in every office of every NGO, church, parliament, ministerial office and presidential palace.

Anything less than a full and explicit adherence to this principle is the death of democracy.  Organisations where the decision-making powers are given into the “capable” hands of a select few who are “entrusted” with these powers achieve just the opposite of what they want.  Decision making becomes more cumbersome, is met with great resistance,  hailed with scorn from people inside and outside the organisation.  Processes become more unwieldy than ever.  Goals and objectives seem ever further out of reach and one becomes what one purports to fight.  Soon, the organisation begins to lose the confidence of its members and the people it is supposed to represent and defend.  Immediately people within the organisation find themselves at odds with it and find they have to start fighting for their own very rights within this organisation.  Soon witch hunts are held against those who are not being “helpful” or “uplifting”.  Soon leaders find themselves being guilty of abuse of power and conspiracy against a lowly individual who is seen as a threat rather than as the asset that they in fact are.

Soon edicts are issued and guillotines erected.

In fact, leaders in organisations need to get over themselves.  In most cases, sharp criticism is highly deserved and when listened to,  highly helpful indeed.  After all, it is just as important to know where to step as it is to know where not to step.

Imagine a captain of a ship that wishes to only hear the positive navigation hails of the helmsmen.  The ship would soon be wrecked on the very rocks that could so easily have been avoided.  Likely such a captain would blame those who were trying to warn.  Only to be found before the court-martial, undoubtedly at odds with the decisions that court would be making.

In many countries the lament is heard that churches, ngo’s and political parties find ever more empty seats and disinterest.  Maybe true and rigorous adherence to democracy rather than vicious  tenacity of power would save many an organisation and cause a rebirth of youthful enthusiasm of would be adherents of any age.

Allemaal een Fantastisch 2010 gewenst!

Vorig jaar was ik erg weinig in de holebibeweging te bekennen en dat vind ik zeer jammer.

De manier waarop ik in het afgelopen jaar op een zijspoor geraakte,  maakte het voor mij  maar al te duidelijk dat wij soms helemaal niet zo ver staan als wij dat als holebibeweging in Vlaanderen wel denken.

De ingrijpende veranderingen die men in 2009 aan de Holebifederatie heeft opgedrongen, waarvan ik nu nog maar op de hoogte ben, zijn van die aard dat ik ze alleen maar diep kan betreuren.

Ik besef dat mensen met alle goede bedoelingen bezig menen te zijn, maar men is nu toch wel zeer ver gegaan en persoonlijk zie ik dat de bal hier wel heel erg mis wordt geslagen.

Het is duidelijk dat ik de nieuwe naam die men ons wil opdringen  absoluut niet zie zitten.

Op dit ogenblik zou ik dat goedkope schoensmeermerknaampje willen neerschrijven, maar ik krijg dit niet eens over mijn lippen noch uit mijn vingers gewrongen.

Het lijkt mij zeer vreemd dat de naam “holebi” plotseling uit de eigen federatienaam wordt geschrapt.  Het doet mij denken aan de schilder die een nieuwe kleur aan zijn palet toevoegt om vervolgens alle andere kleuren er af te schrapen.  Wat heb je daar nu mee gewonnen?

Het uitzicht van het logo met de “baseline”, geeft mij nu niet bepaald positieve kriebels.  Mijn maag keert er een beetje van om. In de eerste plaats wil ik daarbij opmerken dat een logo dat al meteen verduidelijkt moet worden met een “baseline” als uitermate zwak wordt ervaren.  En ja, die naam doet mij veel te veel aan schoensmeer denken.  De redenering daarbij over de aanspreekformule, geeft mij ook een vies gevoel.  Tja, ik word meermaals door straathoertjes zo aangesproken, meestal met een luide roepstem van de andere kant van de straat hier in mijn buurt.  Sorry hoor, maar voor mij is dat dus wel zo platvloers als het kan.

Als spaansprekend iemand werkt het laatste gedeelte nog geen klein beetje op mijn lachspieren.  Het geeft mij de indruk dat men binnen de huidige bezetting op het hoofdkantoor zelf het eigene nogal belachelijk vindt.

En dat “eigene” is ook het Vlaamse hé.  Want wil iemand mij nu eens uitleggen waarom een Vlaamse Holebi en Transgender federatie zich met een Franse naam zou laten opzadelen?

Daarnaast doet het zwakke uitzicht van dat schoensmeermerklogootje ten zeerste denken aan het goedkope behangpapier van de zeventiger jaren van de vorige eeuw.  Oubollig, hoor.

In de persmededeling die ik op de website kon vinden, vond ik niet de preciese doelstellingen terug die de “vernieuwde” holebifederatie zou hebben.  Wel komt men ,  onder de hoofding “De verpakking” notabene, met kernwoorden af waarvan de allereerste “feest” is. Tengevolge ben ik dan ook bang dat die doelstellingen veel te oppervlakkig zijn om nog maar enigszins representatief te zijn voor de beweging.

De nieuwe missie die hierin vernoemd wordt, begint maar al te duidelijk met het afwijzen van het verleden.  Dat éne zinnetje, gekoppeld aan deze ridicule nieuwe naam, heb ik als homo-activist “van het eerste uur” als een vuistslag in het gezicht ervaren.  Iets anders dan age-isme is dat niet.

Het feit dat men nu ook al de homofobie en -folieprijs van naam heeft veranderd, maakt het voor de rest van de wereld maar al te duidelijk dat men de naam “homo” als vies ervaart binnen de eigen werking!!!  Mag ik daarbij ook even duidelijk stellen dat de naam “homo” in de eerste plaats “mens” betekent en in de tweede plaats “gelijke”.  De naam van die prijzen was nooit de naam van de federatie hé.  Ze heetten niet de holebifederatie-folie of –fobie prijs.  Waarom heeft men nu opeens de mens uit deze prijzen geschrapt om die te vervangen door het schoensmeermerknaampje dat men aan onze federatie wil opdringen?

Door ons in variantjes te veranderen, maakt men van de naam een lege doos die als “verpakking” en “merknaam” naar voren wordt geschoven en ons NIET meer vertegenwoordigt en met de eigenlijke inhoud dus op geen enkel vlak overeenstemt.

Door plots met “merknamen” af te komen en met veel tamtam een nieuwe prijs in het leven te roepen die zowaar dé pinkbrand name van het jaar wil gaan belonen, holt men de federatie en daarmee de hele beweging alleen maar verder uit.  Door die prijs dan ook nog eens aan te kondigen op het eigenste moment dat men de eigenlijke “homofobie” (mensenhater) – prijs en de “homofolie”  (mensenliefhebber)-prijs gaat uitreiken, stelt men de diepgang op de laatste plaats en de oppervlakkigheid op de eerste.  Of hoe men  volledig kan ontsporen en de eigen achterban een flinke dreun kan toedienen.

Er zijn tenslotte genoeg commerciële holebi en transgender sites die zich met het uitreiken van een dergelijke prijs kunnen bezighouden, dat MAG  de holebifederatie helemaal niet doen.

Ik zie de huidige werkingsbezetting , aan het begin van het tweede decennium van deze eeuw, precies die fout maken, die wij als federatie  nu juist  moeten vermijden.  Het denken dat achter deze miskleun van een goedkoop schoensmeermerknaampje schuil gaat, staat bol van het neoliberalisme van de nuljaren van deze eeuw.  Dat denken, waarin de commerciële markt als allerheiligst en allerzaligst makend werd verklaard, heeft wel het failliet van die markt en de oppervlakkige gemeenschap waar zij het symptoom van was, veroorzaakt.

Juist op het moment dat jongeren die oppervlakkigheid zeer duidelijk afwijzen, schuift een kleine groep de federatie naar voren met een uitermate misselijkmakende holheid.

Ik stel dan ook voor dat wij tijdens de volgende algemene vergadering ons zèlf eens gaan bezinnen over wie we zijn en waar wij voor staan.  En dat nu net niet gaan vragen aan het één of ander reclamebureautje dat zich per definitie niet met inhoud weet bezig te houden.

Daarbij moet ook gezegd dat de uiterst aggressieve manier waarop men probeert om de Algmene Vergadering voor een voldongen feit te stellen, bij mij een absolute weerzin opwekt.

Ik kan mij alleen maar aansluiten bij de kiritiek van de ILGA, dat deze ridicule naamsverandering duidelijk een brug te ver is.  Of zoals ik het wil stellen, een lege doos te veel.  Daarnaast heeft men daar in Malta op een zeer onheuse manier de indruk gewekt als zou dit schoensmeermerknaampje door de gehele beweging in Vlaanderen met veel gejuich zijn onthaald en een complete omwenteling en vernieuwing hebben teweeg gebracht! Het is op zijn minst een verdraaiing van de feiten wat men daar, op het internationaal toneel heeft voorgesteld.  De vorm wordt hier duidelijk gebruikt om de inhoud te bepalen.  Het trickledown effect waar men nog heilig in schijnt te geloven, en waar een duidelijk centralisme en elitarisme uit spreekt.  Hier werd een make over gepresenteerd als heilsbrenger van alles en iedereen. Gelukkig was er kritiek, maar die is wel op dovemansoren gevallen.

Ik ben één van de allereerste activisten geweest die er steeds op aandrong, zowel hier als in het buitenland, om met de transgemeenschap samen te gaan.   Het doen alsof de belangenbehartiging van transgenders en andersseksuelen een totale vernieuwing zou betekenen is simpelweg een valse voorstelling van de feiten.  De verbreding van een beweging als de onze mag echter niet tot een vervlakking of een uitholling leiden en het is maar al te duidelijk dat dit nu wel het geval is. In de persberichten rond de uitreiking van de uitgeholde prijzen, werd maar al te duidelijk dat de accentverschuiving veel te ver is gegaan.  Opeens vertegenwoordigt men schijnbaar  alleen maar de transgenders en wij, de holebi’s bestaan precies niet meer!

Ik ben dan ook van mening dat men de lachwekkende naam ONMIDDELLIJK moet intrekken, hoe ingeburgerd men die binnen de eigen werking reeds zou mogen vinden. Die “inburgering” is tenslotte een gevolg van de uitputtingslag die men duidelijk met de achterban wil voeren en is juist daarom absoluut onaanvaardbaar.

Daarbij moet mij dan ook van het hart dat het juist aan de communicatie die men zo hoog in het vaandel beweert te dragen ten zeerste scheelt.  Over de veranderingen wil men met de eigen achterban duidelijk niet in communicatie treden.  Men negeert gewoon uiterst koppig de duidelijke negatieve signalen rond dit schoensmeermerknaampje.

Het verwondert mij dan ook niet, maar het doet wel pijn, om van mensen op Facebook e.d. te horen dat men zich absoluut niet meer  vertegenwoordigd voelt. Tenslotte nog dit: “Waarom zou men een dijk van een naam als de Holebifederatie moeten vervangen door de lege doos van een goedkoop schoensmeermerknaampje?”
